Problem
New Zealand is one of the most diverse countries in the world, but diversity does not always mean connection. For many people, culture can feel like something they need to explain, defend, or simplify for others. Our Cultural Marks was created to explore how culture could become something people celebrate together, rather than something that keeps people separate.
Solution
Our Cultural Marks is an interactive public art experience where people create their own artwork by combining cultural stamps from around the world. Participants move through a physical kiosk, choose stamps from different regions, build one personal artwork, scan it, and add it to a shared digital mural.

Project Overview
Our Cultural Marks was a group project built around culture, creativity, and public participation.
The idea was to create an experience where people could explore cultural symbols in a way that felt open, respectful, and collaborative. Instead of asking people to represent culture through one fixed identity, the project let them create something new by combining multiple cultural influences into one artwork.
The final outcome was a physical and digital public art experience.
Participants would move through a kiosk, collect stamps from different cultural regions, create an artwork on paper, scan it, and upload it to a large digital mural. Over time, the mural would grow as more people added their own creations.
The project focused on multicultural families, especially people who live between more than one culture or are surrounded by multiple cultural backgrounds. We wanted the experience to reflect the idea that culture is not always neat, singular, or easy to box in.
For me, the project became a major learning experience in team leadership. I was responsible for helping shape the direction, making decisions when the concept became unclear, assigning work, keeping people organised, and designing the web and UI side of the experience.
