Problem
Many public spaces are designed to move people through them as efficiently as possible, leaving little room for spontaneity, curiosity, or play. Through interviews and observation in Wynyard Quarter, we found that corporate workers often follow the same routines every day, with few opportunities to break away from them, even for a moment. WhyNot? Studio responded with Act On Impulse, a series of interactive installations designed around the idea of irresistible micro-play. Using simple pressure-activated interactions, light, sound, and movement, each installation invites people to briefly step outside their routine and engage in a small moment of consequence-free fun.
The Solution
Adults still want playful moments, but public life rarely gives them permission. By making play subtle, instant, and low-commitment, we can help people break routine without feeling awkward. This lined up well with the brief we were given, which said adult play is often limited by social norms, time pressure, and environments built around efficiency rather than spontaneity or experimentation
